The Between-Point Routine That Calms Your Nerves

Pressure shows up between points. Use a 20-second routine to let go of the last rally and commit to the next one.

Every point ends with a story in your head. The best competitors have a quick routine that stops the story and resets their focus. This three-step sequence is simple enough to use in any match.

Step 1: Release (5 seconds)

Turn away from the court, relax your shoulders, and take a slow breath. This is where you let the last point go, win or lose.

Step 2: Reflect (7 seconds)

Ask one tactical question: what is the high-percentage play here? Keep it simple: crosscourt, body serve, or middle return.

Step 3: Recommit (8 seconds)

Walk to the line with a clear target in mind. Visualize the first ball and decide before you bounce the ball.

Make it automatic

  • Use the same breath count every time.
  • Choose one word cue: "reset" or "commit".
  • Keep your eyes on the strings to stay present.

When your routine is consistent, your swing stays calmer. The goal is not to feel zero nerves, but to play with clear intentions.
