The best returners control the first three steps: split, read, and move. If those are sharp, the swing can stay compact and relaxed.
Step 1: Split on contact
Time your hop to the server's contact. Landing at that moment loads your legs and makes the first step automatic.
Step 2: Read the toss and shoulder
The toss height and the hitting shoulder angle reveal more than you think. Train your eyes on those cues and you will react sooner.
Step 3: Move with a compact swing
Big swings are too slow on fast serves. Think block-and-guide for pace, then add acceleration when the ball slows down.
High-percentage targets
- First serves: aim for the middle third to neutralize pace.
- Second serves: step in and send the ball deep crosscourt.
- Under pressure: pick one target and commit early.
Track where your returns land. A deep middle return is often better than a risky line shot.
